That the Satyricon are a name that has made history in the Norwegian Black Metal scene, no one can deny it; that they are the undisputed creators of masterpieces like "Dark Medieval Time," "Nemesis Divina," and "ShadowThrone," there is nothing to object to about this either.
In my opinion, after leaving Moonfog (a very famous Norwegian record company of equally famous bands in the genre) to first move to EMI, releasing "Volcano," and then moving to Road Runner, releasing "Now Diabolical," Satyricon started a disastrous period. With this CD "Rebel Extravaganza," Satyricon change their sound, they remain consistent with their genre, but listening to the masterpieces mentioned above, you wouldn't think this album was the result of their efforts; the CD is played divinely with a devastating Frost (the drummer) yet...
The CD opens with "Tied Bronze Chains" a song which, like the others, didn't convince me at all; again, well played and recorded, but if it weren't for Satyr's unmistakable voice, you wouldn't say it was their CD. Next is "Filthgrinder," the same argument as the previous song; given what they have accustomed us to, no one would have expected a CD like this. More or less, the album remains constant with our new sound, so it's useless to go into a detailed track-by-track analysis. Let it be clear, the record is not to be discarded; on the contrary, it requires many listens (I have owned it for 3 years and it still doesn't convince me).
Therefore, I recommend a very careful listen, (and as Satyricon advise us on the back of the record "LISTEN AT MAXIMUM VOLUME"), to avoid being almost disappointed as I was.
Kind regards
