Although the Californians Saosin have been playing for the past 4 years, it was only in 2006 that they finally managed to release their first debut album. After several high-quality EPs, Saosin come forward by "diving" into the sea of modern emocore where this album somehow stands out among the others as it is a very aggressive record that to call it simple emocore would be an understatement, a record that recalls post-hardcore and at times alternative rock.
In fact, what immediately stands out about the record is the powerful and not trivial yet quite melodic sound of the guitars, accompanied by an engaging and stable rhythm section, a sign of the band's technical prowess.
The album opens with "It's far better to learn", a sweet and melodic song that will then influence all 13 tracks of the album. The tracks flow and we arrive at "Voices", one of the best songs on the album where an immediate chorus makes its appearance throughout the duration of the song, this would then become their first single. The penultimate track, "Bury your head", is a melancholic song excellently sung by Cove Reber, whose voice elevates the quality of the entire record.
In short, a truly beautiful album, soaked in melancholy and anger, an album at times melodic and at times violent, an album played by talented young men whom I sincerely hope will continue on this path, an album that was long-awaited but now we can really say it was worth the wait.
Reber’s splendid voice, which possesses remarkable vocal technique capable of high extensions that embellish everything.
If you’re looking for an album leaning towards hardcore you’re in the wrong place; instead, Saosin offers melodic punk and alternative rock with grit and adrenaline.
