Santa Sangre formed in 1995 from a branch of the Carnival of Fools. Their debut album Ogni città avrà il tuo nome was released in 1997 by Consorzio Produttori Indipendenti/Sonica and was elected album of the year by Mucchio Selvaggio in the 'Fuori dal mucchio' category.

Band name borrowed from Alejandro Jodorowsky's film Santa Sangre; early line-up included Mauro Ermanno Giovanardi on vocals (later of La Crus). Debut single/track Mare crudele appeared on the compilation 'Soniche avventure'. The 1997 album runs about 37 minutes and includes a surf-style instrumental cover of Adriano Celentano's "24.000 baci".
