THE REVIEW

Dirty, wasted, stinky, hallucinated, psychedelic, heavy, weird. Saint Vitus.

Bands like these do good for music, regardless of its inclination. Born in 1980 in the suburbs of Los Angeles, the four historic members made a name for themselves with their self-titled debut in 1984, an album that reeks of alcohol and drugs with its hallucinatory and haunting rhythm. Songs like "Saint Vitus" and "Zombie Hunger" will forever remain in the history of this complex and unknown genre that is the Saint Vitus' doom/stoner. Dark, rotten, at times even forced, to the point of giving the impression that the band goes beyond what they set out to achieve. These musical style points are fully respected in the second chapter of the band, "Hallow's Victim," featuring the same debut lineup.

Everything expected from Saint Vitus is present here, much to the fans' delight. The rotten atmosphere is amplified by the stunning work of the axeman Dave Chandler, alongside the vocals of Scott Reagers, representing the distinctive elements of the first part of their career.

The gallops "War is our destiny" and "White Stallions" open the macabre ritualistic dance of Saint Vitus, who with "Mystic Lady" reach unattainable heights of sonic liquefaction, while the title track moves at less "extreme" rhythms. Two more songs close the album, enshrined for posterity: "Just Friends" and the spectacular "Prayer for the (M)asses", with a rhythm expressly designed for headbanging.

That's all it takes to conclude a Saint Vitus album. Seven tracks of doom with a putrid flavor are enough. Now you just have to dust off this masterpiece. Eat this satanic boletus without fear.

White Stallions
(Chandler)

yesterday I saw my face
pictured in the sky
as I gazed upon myself
my whole life flashed by
I heard the sound of hoofbeats
from a thousand angry mares
before I could control my thoughts
my inner soul was theirs

white stallions
in my vein
white stallions
lord stop me
before I go insane

took me to the promised land
where everything is free
looked around and saw my friends
laughing loud at me
a great stone wall divided us
on their side was a dance
on my side was endless torture
guess I blew my chance

only time can ease the pain
the stallions left behind
tiny hoofprints on my arm
strung out in a line
wish that I could start again
and change my evil ways
trapped upon the stallion's back
'till my dying days

Saint Vitus

Saint Vitus are an American doom metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1979 (originally as Tyrant). Pioneers of the genre, they released seminal albums on SST Records in the 1980s, with vocals by Scott Reagers and later Scott “Wino” Weinrich, and Dave Chandler’s signature fuzz-laden guitar. After a 1990s split, they returned in the late 2000s and issued Lillie: F-65 in 2012.
