I know our love is wrong
I am a criminal
I am a Prisoner
For your love.
A voice. A guitar.
Ryan Adams again reveals himself with his latest work "Prisoner." He narrates his imprisonment, an inner ailment that has tormented him in recent years during the most difficult period of his life.
It is said that it is in the darkest moments that an artist manages to bring out the best in himself, expressing his profound pain in the best possible way.
But let's get to the point. What is the pain that torments him so much and that he is still serving in his musical cell, an outlet for his sorrow?
Well, the cause is the divorce from actress Mandy Moore, to whom he was married until 2009, an event that has afflicted him in the years following and that has led him today to the release of his new and tormented album.
Ryan Adams reveals himself in all his fragility, pouring his bitter and painful love experience into music like a raging river.
With his elegant 80s citationism (Springsteen, Smiths, Rem, Police), he prepares a blend that perhaps may seem familiar to many, but offers plenty of original insights. Each piece, one after the other, is a little gem with a country flavor, tinged with a simple and essential pop-rock taste, a perfect combination of sound and writing, a perfectly balanced compositional formula. The fabric woven by the guitar's reverb and stitched by the rhythm section is completed and finally polished by Adams's voice, often enriched by the intensity of the harmonica.
This is the album that in his entire discography has most seen him put all of himself into every single song, cleansing and freeing himself from fear, anger, disappointment, love. From "Do You Still Love Me?", airy and powerful, to the more shadowy "Haunted House", from "Tightrope" increasingly intense with each passing second, to the acoustic ballad "To Be Without You", Ryan Adams expressed everything inside him with one of his best works.
What can I say, Prisoner is an excellent album, certainly among the best of 2017, it excites and transports the listener into the world of the writer, who, with his instruments, allows the message to reach its destination. This is one of the most interesting aspects of music, the power to convey messages, ideas, values, and to bring all this to as many people as possible, the power to change the world within each of us
for the better.
