Sometimes I wake up at night and I thirst for blood. If it's a good night, I find someone between the sheets who can quench this thirst. If it's not a good night then the next day won't be good either.
I couldn't say if Run The Jewels, to make their second consecutive hit, have had more good nights than bad ones or vice versa; the fact is that after the zombie, even the mummy is proudly making its voice heard from my speakers.
El-P and Killer Mike seem to have found their main path and thanks to a truly successful combination of rhymes, rhythms, atmospheres, and graphics, they are building (piece by piece but not too slowly) an imaginary world of their own that I really hope can make them become a kind of rock star combo like we haven't seen in years.
RTJ is the underground surfacing, it's the focus of a career that I'd say is now two decades long, spent among countless projects and collaborations, it's the dark alley of the big metropolis, it's the anger of the marginalized. It's the affirmation after years of hard work, the alternative that faces into the mainstream.
For all these reasons, I can't help but adore them: it's been years since a rock band has captured my attention and sympathies like these two have with this project.
Listen to them, hordes of bloodsuckers!
