Rowland Stuart Howard (24 October 1959 – 30 December 2009) was an Australian singer, songwriter and guitarist, known for his work with The Boys Next Door / The Birthday Party, Crime & the City Solution, These Immortal Souls and for his solo albums including Teenage Snuff Film and Pop Crimes.

Howard wrote the song "Shivers" as a teenager and gained recognition as the guitarist of The Birthday Party. He collaborated frequently with Mick Harvey and had artistic ties with Nick Cave. His later solo work (notably Teenage Snuff Film and Pop Crimes) is widely praised for its dark, lyrical intensity and distinctive Fender Jaguar guitar sound. He died of liver cancer in 2009.

DeBaser reviews present Rowland S. Howard as a singular post‑punk guitarist and songwriter. Critics praise Teenage Snuff Film and Pop Crimes for their dark beauty, electric Fender Jaguar sound and lyrical intensity. Reviews emphasise themes of despair, romanticism and self‑destruction across his late solo work.

For:Fans of post‑punk, dark alternative rock, guitar‑driven singer‑songwriters and listeners of Nick Cave/Birthday Party related music.

Teenage Snuff Film is a practically perfect album, without a single weak track and not a note out of place.

Rowland leaves us by gifting a touching farewell album, the testament of a man victim of his excesses, trying to come to terms with the idea of inevitable end, a sensitive and deeply romantic musician, one of the most interesting to have spanned the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s.
