Why love these Rotting Out: they play old school hardcore / they're from Los Angeles / they don't give a damn about anything or anyone / they have a toothless frontman who goes wild at every concert, hitting anyone who crosses his path. I was eagerly awaiting this “Reckoning,” a five-track EP that serves as an appetizer for the main course, the new album scheduled for the end of the year. And my expectations were thoroughly met: in less than twenty minutes, this quintet has proven themselves to be among the best out there today among the new wave made in the U.S., raised on milk and Suicidal Tendencies and with very clear ideas on what to do. What? Step heavily on the accelerator, produce tracks where chaos is the order of the day, and keep that old-school attitude high that is making them famous in every corner of the world. “Reckoning” is composed of five tracks as we mentioned: “Born” which, after a short intro, immediately makes things clear by delivering sonic slaps to the unsuspecting listener, “Eyes wide” which is a mix between early Suicidal Tendencies and skate punk, “End of the road” a track that invokes NYHC with a steady rhythm and super pumped-up choruses, and finally the gems: “I don’t care” and “Live fast die young,” famous Circle Jerks songs revisited with the typical badass mood of Rotting Out. Produced by Taylor Young (already at work with Terror, Xibalba, Code Orange), “Reckoning” is indeed a great mini, only a pity for its short duration.
