from “Circe”

Evaluating a debut album is always a bit difficult. Evaluating an Italian pop-dance album is even more challenging.

A first album carries many expectations, the desire to show the whole world everything you have to offer. Sometimes there are pieces that remain in the drawer for years, waiting for an album in which they can be included and fit organically. Others are born in a few minutes and end up there. In short, a debut is a bit of a “hit or miss,” and Romina Falconi understood this, having waited a long time for this moment. For this reason, she included a bit of everything she had written in the last decade.

With these 19 tracks, Falconi throws herself without reserves. In some cases, she lands softly with pieces that, in their pop-dance sound, hit the mark (for example, “Il mio prossimo amore”; “Eyeliner”, “Circe”), while in other episodes, she crashes with less successful tracks (“Mi trovi qui”, “Viva lei”). It is not an album that makes conceptual or sonic continuity its strong point (unlike its successor).

The best of the album comes when the Roman singer moves away from the territories of Italian song to delve into realms of dark electronic dance (“Circe” and “Lista nera” are two very powerful examples) creating a very intriguing nighttime atmosphere.

Another merit of “Certi sogni” is the way the singer-songwriter manages to encapsulate the concepts she wants to express in phrases that hit you at first listen and push the listener to hit repeat multiple times (which in my opinion is synonymous with good pop). The chorus of Playboy (“ed é come andare a zoccole e pretendere le coccole”) is one of the perfect examples.

In my opinion, Romina is one of the few who carries on an underground pop discourse in Italy with coherence and determination. There are many ideas, just as there is a high dose of courage. Inversely proportional is the amount of resources available to the artist. This is a clear example of how, even thanks to the web, with clear ideas, you can be successful and create your own niche from (almost) nothing.

Here are the lyrics to “Lista nera” which is a brief summary of the atmosphere of the entire album:

There are a series of people to avoid;
Lovers, black holes, intestinal people...
My little nurse, now listen to me:
You won't save him. Come on, run! Surrender!

The "talkative" wants to add a concept,
I would tell him: "Yes, I understood you but what did you say?"

The "interruptus" man, sniffs like he's a little elf,
toxic during the day, broken in bed!

The "unaffectionate" will cover you with anxieties
And if you say "I love you" he responds with "Thanks"!

The "possessive" is a heart-sucker and won't give up
Don't be surprised if you have spies in your underwear!

He...
Said goodbye to me
He loved me too much
How is it that I don't explode

There's the "carpe diem" guy standing there,
You'll grow old waiting for him to unblock!

Go away! It's better this way!
You want to stay friends, but friends with who?
No, no, no... Black list...
It ends here! It's better this way!
It's not your fault if you're on my black list!
Black list

The "misunderstood artist" can't keep up with you
He would sell his mother just to be famous!
Then there's the "damned" one who drinks like a sink
He doesn't touch and mythologizes you and him beyond the garden!
The "Fantozzi man" has a wife he doesn't want,
Children he doesn't want, but without you, he dies...
Who knows why he doesn't make plans but tells you "I love you"
He will always choose "her" and staying on the couch!
The "diarrhea man" is the one who gets on your nerves
He realizes he's lost you when it's already too late!
Then there's the liar, how cute he is...
It happened to everyone... the "Aladdin"!

He...
Said goodbye...
Wants his space...
I would strap a rocket to him...

The "revival" man, I don't know, thinks of you and then
Will return when you've healed from him!
