THE REVIEW

Increasingly strong and unpredictable atmospheric events, our homes devastated by the violence of hurricanes, our crops destroyed by the sea that relentlessly advanced for miles.

Many of us died, and so we left the coast to head inland, into the dead zone, battered by winds but safer.

Then, one day, They arrived.

We don't know from where and it hardly matters anymore, the sunlight makes Them invincible, we can't see Them when They attack, They quickly disassemble us and absorb us. The same fate has befallen the animals; to Them, we are the same blood, men and beasts.

We will never be able to fight Them, and we have resigned ourselves to that.

We are men, but we sleep in deep holes dug in the ground, we nourish ourselves with what we can. With the light, we hide hunted, surviving in a nocturnal exile so as not to feed Them with ourselves.

The light colored, the sun warmed the skin, and we sang closely, progressing hand in hand, eyes into eyes, that's how I remember childhood and life, but I must forget it not to go mad.

Now I sleep alone; I don't want to suffer another loss.

As a Man, I've made my decision, and soon I will see the Dawn one more time; I don’t want to die in the dark knowing the inevitability of my fate.

Just a few more moments, and from the horizon, it will illuminate my face. I am beginning to glimpse the first rosy glows; will I have time to fill my sight with them? The morning cold makes my eyes weep, but I can distinguish the warm vapor of my breath, and I am moved; I am no longer afraid.

Roly Porter is a British electronic music producer and composer. Formerly one half of Vex’d, he launched a solo career spanning dense dark ambient, drone, and cinematic electronics, releasing Aftertime (2011), Life Cycle of a Massive Star (2013), Third Law (2016), and Kistvaen (2020).
