I can only laugh at those who consider this film one of the best Italian movies ever released... Italian, really, but perhaps you weren't born yet when we were the best in the world in this field.
A propaganda film of the American government, awarded by the American propaganda with the Oscars, owes much to this regime success with many scenes, including that final scene when the savior arrives, the good guy, namely the Yankee tank coming to save the world with the beautiful star-spangled banner, and thus all of Hollywood's establishment, subservient to the American government, stood up to applaud and lavish praises on the great swindler Benigni, the sly Benigni, awarding him several statuettes on the night of the Oscars extravaganza, that's how you become famous, a bit of cunning and the Benigni of "berlinguer ti voglio bene" has vanished into thin air (that was a great film).
Sly Benigni, you wrote the script with Richard Perle, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld, huh?? You wanted interplanetary success, huh? But you forgot cinema somewhere under all this farcical moralism and propaganda historicism, you've gone soft Benigni, shame on you for what you've done, and stop going on and on with this Dante, whom you don't even recite well, have you ever heard Vittorio Gassman or Carmelo Bene recite Dante??
So it's better that you retire, you fawning Tuscan and vulgar self-made entrepreneur, sellout!

"Life is Beautiful is his acme, the masterpiece of cinematic and artistic hypocrisy, where every trait of the script, every line, every whim is subordinated to begging for the viewer’s pity."
"Doing it the way Benigni did is an abomination. And Life is Beautiful is just that."

"Life is Beautiful is poetry, pure and simple."
"An inspired Roberto Benigni says all this with a devastating power and simplicity... The kind that only children (of all ages) have and can express."

This is not a masterpiece. The idea of the film, in itself, is splendid.
A moment of unheard anguish has become a mockery.
