Through a secret agent, the history of the CIA, the American intelligence agency, is retraced.
Yes, the CIA, always the CIA, the FBI, the secret services, conspiracies, international intrigues, America meddling, career men who think they know everything and instead don't know a damn thing. The repetitiveness of these themes alone should be enough to make you avoid watching the film, but there's Bob De Niro, and so you watch the film.
Who doesn't know Bob De Niro, he's made epic films, but his directorial efforts are somewhat less known. Before this, he directed 'A Bronx Tale', a modest film without pretensions, guess about what? Mafia, America meddling, career men, gangsters, etc... What imagination, right? Well, after years in which he starred in more flops than films, here he returns to directing, since he is one of the few who has nothing to lose, and he delivers us... a nice mishmash!
Basically, it's about the CIA and how these seemingly anonymous men have quietly managed to dominate the world. The CIA guy almost wants to be the bearer of "universal justice." The classic shootouts are replaced by glances and glares. So you need to pay the utmost attention to the dialogues, and if you have poor historical and political knowledge, you'll struggle to understand the film's meaning (I struggled too, and I'm not ashamed of it). That is, here we're talking about twenty-five years of American history in almost three hours! If you're not strong, you'll fall into anxiety or pause and make yourself a sandwich and a beer.
In short, I recommend it because the performances of De Niro, Damon, Jolie, and Baldwin are good, but otherwise, you can avoid watching this classic style spy thriller, and especially if you haven't seen it, watch 'The Departed'!
Sorry Bob, but go back to acting, THAT'S BETTER.
