The Profile

Rival Sons are an American rock band from Long Beach, California, formed in 2009. Known for ’70s-styled hard/blues rock powered by Jay Buchanan’s vocals and Scott Holiday’s guitar, they earned Grammy nominations for Feral Roots (Best Rock Album) and “Too Bad” (Best Rock Performance) in 2020.

Core members: Jay Buchanan (vocals), Scott Holiday (guitar), Mike Miley (drums); Dave Beste joined on bass in 2013, replacing Robin Everhart. Early releases appeared on Earache Records. They have toured with AC/DC, Deep Purple and Kiss. The artwork for Pressure and Time was created by Storm Thorgerson.

Three DeBaser reviews frame Rival Sons as a California outfit channeling ‘60s/’70s hard and blues rock with grit and melody. Pressure and Time is praised for its raw immediacy while Head Down and Great Western Valkyrie show growth, breadth, and strong hooks. Jay Buchanan’s vocals and Scott Holiday’s riffs draw frequent acclaim, even amid recurring Led Zeppelin comparisons. Overall verdict: not novel, but fresh, authentic, and highly listenable.
