Here we are again with yet another "Beatles + XYZ" experiment, which always draws attention and briefly boosts sales for the singers and/or groups who take on the challenge. Thus, we have this little-known Rita Lee, a genuine Brazilian with 4/5 albums to her name, tackling the Lennon/McCartney repertoire but rearranging everything with samba or typically bossa nova sounds. It's rather an insipid and bland experiment that neither adds nor detracts anything from immortal tracks like "A Hard Day's Night," "With a Little Help From My Friends," or "Michelle." Everything is very soft and vaguely lounge-style, reminiscent of a trendy little spot in Testaccio, where the songs flow as sweet and syrupy as caramel, all neatly polished, tender, tender, with arrangements that are, to say the least, traditional.
Certainly, nothing scandalous, quite the opposite, but nothing that makes you want to delve deeper into songs that you know not just by heart but even more. It's a classic commercial operation that smells of marketing right from the cover (half Brazilian, half with the singer phoning from a British telephone booth!!). An album that's cuddly and tender, perfect as background music for sitting by the fireplace with your partner, sweet and sugary like Winnie the Pooh bears. In the end, sometimes you can't ask much more from music, right?
PS: Steer clear for Beatles lovers, those who want to listen to good music, and especially... the wild lovers!
