The second album by Rilo Kiley is a thoroughly enjoyable collection of pop tracks, slightly more complex than those in "Take Off And Landings," as already demonstrated in the opening "The Good That Won't Come Out," where Jenny Lewis tries to extend the nuances of her (beautiful) voice, while the soundscape is enriched with keyboards and various effects.
The title track seems tailor-made to gain radio airplay outside the college circuit, but despite this, apart from the somewhat predictable solo halfway through the track, it remains an excellent exercise in class. "So Long" ventures into Beach Boys-like territories, while the fingerpicking of "Hail To Whatever You Found In The Sunlight That Surrounds You" is evidently inspired by the good Elliott Smith. The final "Spectacular Views" is almost pop-punk and closes a good album, which, however, loses something when it picks up the pace and tries to align itself with more mainstream music.
Despite this, it still deserves an attentive listen.
