Musicals suck. From my point of view, they are decidedly boring and sometimes too attached to texts exclusively about lost and found love.
Take "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". It is a musical film but it is not at all boring and conventional... quite the opposite.

The plot intertwines from the first scenes, combining the comedy of the early scenes with the tragedy of the later ones. Characters with quirky personalities and tragicomic situations give the film that extra touch, making it unique in its genre. The same aspects are present in the soundtrack, entirely composed by Richard O'Brien, who appears in the film under the ambiguous guise of Riff Raff. Songs built on a Rock n roll base that sometimes lean towards pop, other times towards jazzy rock, and draw their real source of inspiration from the hilarious lyrics. Desecrated church choruses, tap dance routines, endless screams that reach their peak with the arrival on scene of Meat Loaf, the unforgettable rocker (Bat Out of Hell n.d.r) who unfortunately in the film soon meets his end as an "inconvenient character".
Notable mentions include the wonderful: "I'm going home", "The Time Warp", "Hot Patootie", "Sweet Transvestite", and "I Can Make You A Man".
The actors are particularly excellent, delivering the songs with the necessary theatricality and the kitsch taste that each character embodies in one way or another.

It would deserve a full 10 stars if the limit weren't 5!
A must for all the rockers and non-rockers of the entire world.

"The RHS indeed destroys the entire tradition of musicals...the second makes fun of everything and everyone, diving into bad taste not out of conviction, but because there was nothing more fun left to do."

"The soundtrack, a glam jewel symbol of a disoriented era that finally knew how to laugh at itself."

A sensual ballet on tiptoe... Too bad the ballerina is a he...

The soundtrack elicits smiles and fears, it tears, compresses... It cradles you in dreams to awaken you in a world of nightmares.
