I have never really liked REM too much, the only thing I ever bought in my life was the compilation "Eponymous" to have the early tracks (Radio Free Europe) and especially the magnificent "It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)".
At first listen, I usually like them ("Monster" at first listen was beautiful, but then quickly worn out), but then the lyrics always seem paradoxically empty to me, especially when they decide to do something musically ultracommercial ("Shiny Happy People"?). In short, we're not in sync.

Now they are doing a very nice thing, on the band's official website "remhq.com" they allow you to download an entire album for free (10 tracks), this "r.e.m.IX" complete with cover available for download in pdf format, very minimalistic to be honest, white with the black writing "r.e.m.IX" on the front and the titles on the back, also black on a white background and nothing else. They must have thought about those with a black and white printer.
Six remixers get to work and remix six songs from the latest album "Reveal"; there are four versions of "I've Been High", two of "The Lifting" and individually "I'll Take The Rain", "She Just Wants To Be", "Beach Ball" and "Summer Turns To High".

The album is very enjoyable, in concept and realization it resembles "Mixed Up" by The Cure. The different versions of the same song are interesting. "The Lifting - Knobody/Dahoud Darien for 12 Nations" is minimalist electronic.
The other version "The Lifting – Now It's Overhead Mix By Andy Lemaster" is the best and truly topsy-turvy with beautiful reverberating guitars that sway and refract throughout the song.
"I've Been High – Matthew Intended Herbert" is instead more relaxed and ambient before kicking off with an almost acid house base, but slow.

An excellent must-have album also because it is free.
