Before the commercial successes, before the heaps of money...
A literally insane bass opens the dance of this sort of "best of" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, released in 1992, after the band's astounding success with "Blood Sugar Sex Magik".
The album (which is evidently an attempt by the record company to fully exploit the Red Hot phenomenon) contains material from their best period, that is from 1984 to 1991, from when the group performed "wearing only a sock" to the "Under The Bridge" period. Some tracks are, in my opinion, real gems like the frenetic "Me & My Friends", "Show Me Your Soul" or "Hollywood".
Perhaps fans of "By the Way" may not like this album, but this is and remains the best music that the Red Hot Chili Peppers have made. Outrageous lyrics, explicit sexual references season the texts, making everything very "spicy" (whoever has the chance should watch some videos from the period 1984-1991). Therefore, there are songs that not many people know but are still very, very interesting pieces; it's a real shame that the latest Red Hot never present these tracks live. These Red Hot Chili Peppers are the most scandalous, the most perverted, but they are also the truest, much truer than those circulating in recent years on MTV and company. After this golden period, the Red Hot would release increasingly modest albums (though I must say I liked "Californication"), progressively distancing themselves from their original style.
Every song is played with energy and a high adrenaline rate.
They had just found an identity, Kledis was seeking moral redemption after Slovak’s death, and Frusciante could freely express his creative flair.
