What they tell you about the Red Hot Chili Peppers today is all bullshit. Saying that their concerts are great is blasphemy. In recent years, their live power has waned, and now all we have left is a chart-topping lump.
In 1990, the Chilis were at their peak. That was the period when they conceived 'Blood Sugar Sex Magic' and some beautiful songs in my opinion (Show Me Your Soul). During that time, they also reached their zenith in terms of live performances. This is evidenced by the dvd “What’s Hits!?” and especially “Stone Cold Bush.” The songs from the previous "Mother’s Milk" are not their best, but they certainly express their punk rock energy the best. The concerts showed us this even better. They were something crazy, pure energy. The rhythm section is excellent, Frusciante (extremely high) is, in my opinion, in his most creative period with RHCP, and Kiedis puts all his charisma into it. Take “Stone Cold Bush” as an example. It's a strong song, but not particularly original; well, it's incredible how it transforms live. The rough bass lines intertwine with the acidic guitar perfectly, and the adrenaline of the voice perfectly completes the picture, naturally together with the hammering drums.
But the true secret of the Red Hot was not this; it wasn't the music. Their real innovation was that they took the visual aspect of concerts to a higher level. Without special effects, without anything extra, just their strong personalities. As close-knit as ever, playing was fun for them, and it's a pleasure for us to watch them. Beyond his flaws as a singer, Anthony Kiedis is a rock innovator because, besides singing, he entertained the audience with his entire being. A splendid man, shirtless, dressed haphazardly, and more frantic than ever, he gave his all in every concert. He was sincerity personified. And he perfectly complemented the madness of the other members. The innovation of those Peppers concerts was that the group's strong physicality transformed good songs into excellent ones.
It wasn't just the music that mattered, but also the appearance, that is, the image. Watching them is an exciting mix of sonic energy and visual pleasure. I recommend all of you to watch “Stone Cold Bush” from the dvd “What’s Hits!?” to understand what I mean.
