The name of the band consisting of Peter Hayes (guitar, bass, vocals), Robert Turner (guitar, bass, vocals) and Nick Jago (drums) is taken from the 1954 film by Laslo Benedek featuring Marlon Brando, "The Wild One".
Brando's biker gang was called "Black Rebels Motorcycle Club".
B.R.M.C. dropped the "s" and named themselves. They formed in San Francisco in 1998, and this is their first album (B.R.M.C) ...what a load of crap... so far so good...
This is the most useless album I've ever had the misfortune to listen to.
B.R.M.C. are a photocopy made with expired toner of the Jesus And Mary Chain. They copy the sounds, in the videos they copy the aesthetics of "Psychocandy", they copy the haircuts, the singing style.
B.R.M.C. are at best a "tribute band", but not the "big thing" heralded by the (colluding) press.
But they don't want to be a "tribute band" (the No Way Sis, an excellent "tribute band" to the Oasis, come to mind), in interviews, they claim that the Mary Chain didn’t inspire them, they hadn't heard them, but rather the Ride.
When evaluated as a "tribute band," the second single, the first track on the LP, "Love Burns," = Mary Chain with swoosch effect guitars might be enjoyable; "Whatever Happened to My Rock'N'Roll (Punk Song)" remains unclassifiable, the title is awful, and it's completely awful overall, "Rifles" is tolerable.
Alternatively, one could go for a walk.
The rest is just so.An album to throw in the trash. My copy was taken back to the store, I said it was a gift, but I don't like it. I exchanged it for "Hatful of Hollow" by The Smiths, which I didn't have on CD.
Ah, I almost forgot, they don't just copy the "Mary Chain", but in the last track of the album, they also copy Spacemen 3, in the "spiritual" "Salvation", not even coming close to the magnificence of Spacemen 3. A total waste of time.
The B.R.M.C. make inspired music, with a fresh (almost cold) sound and yet rich in chiaroscuro.
For rock purists, this album is a must-listen.
That said, the hour I spent with him was pleasant and, in some ways, "refreshing."
I’ve just finished re-listening to the debut album by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. It seemed like a fitting way to coherently close the day.
