Spring Rain!
Liberty Belle And The Black Diamond Express is the fourth work by The Go-Betweens, an album that once again opens new horizons for the Australian band. With this album, Forster and McLennan come closer than ever before to the roots of American music. The sound becomes more open, and the arrangements, although more sumptuous than in the past, are also rural and pastoral at the same time.
Like all the works by The Go-Betweens, this one does not lack in being pleasantly delightful, warm, and enveloping.
Forster and Mclennan offer us some truly spectacular ballads like the opening track Spring Rain (halfway between Fogerty and Morrissey) or the ironic Head Full Of Steam (here we are in Byrne’s territory) and the lovely melancholy of Bow Down, the blistering rock-pop of In The Core Of The Flame, and the tender and poignant Apology Accepted.
Overall, a very pleasant album that with each listen keeps its main qualities intact.
Liberty Belle And The Black Diamond Express is a work that will always remain fresh, exciting, and surprising like spring rain.
