The Heads, an ultra-underground group from Bristol, creators of a total psychedelia that encapsulates in a single work over thirty years of a genre that has seen multiple forms and evolutions.
This album is an inexhaustible container of influences ranging from the psychedelic classics (Hendrix, Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, Gong) to the English anarchic/subversive movements (Deviants, Pink Fairies, Punk) to the garage bands and the Detroit scene (13th Floor Elevators, Electric Prunes, Seeds, Stooges, Mc5, Grand Funk) to the space excursions of the German cosmic couriers (Krautrock, that is, Can, Faust, Amon Duul).
Under Sided is a true trip of almost seventy minutes, pointless to describe it track by track, a cosmic journey to be savored in its entirety. Almost all the pieces start with the classic song form and then degenerate into incredible space jams, which expand immeasurably into an orgy of effects saturated with expanded electricity and hyper-distorted cacophony. I have really never heard solos so acidic and abrasive, so wrenching as to severely test even the most prepared eardrums.
They are categorized as a stoner rock or heavy psychedelia band, but the feeling is that of a work of modern heavy acid rock, a bit like the things the early Monster Magnet did at the time of the great Ep 25... Tab, but here decidedly more in grand style and with greater compositional complexity.
An absolute masterpiece that requires great listening commitment, but that will not fail to offer fantastic mental excursions to unknown planets and galaxies, in a cosmos we thought we knew perfectly.
