Are Le Orme no longer the fantastic trio Collage–Uomo Di Pezza–Felona e Sorona? Who cares!
Have Le Orme veered (according to many) towards a less demanding prog-pop? Who cares!
Do Le Orme no longer keep pace with Area and PFM? Who gives a damn!
Is Tagliapietra's magical voice still there? Yes! Are the lyrics still enveloped in enchantment? Yes! Are the soundscapes still filled with that unique and inimitable sweetness? Undoubtedly! So go and discover these 'Verità Nascoste' yourselves, in a Venice that perhaps feels too small for our dear musicians, but surely contributes to making it all special!
I admit it: this review is biased. Yes, and it should be that way for all of us Italians, those who lived through the fantastic '70s and those who didn’t, because while in England and the rest of the world there was music for all tastes and progressive rock was running out of steam, in our country Le Orme were using the simplest, most coveted yet most difficult weapon to wield: BEAUTY! If there is an adjective for the music of Le Orme, it is precisely this. BEAUTIFUL! And unmatched!
And it was like that for almost all their albums, and perhaps they made some pact with the angels to gift us this music; songs like “Insieme al concerto”, “In Ottobre”, “Verità Nascoste”, “Il gradino più stretto del cielo”, and when will we tire of listening to them again… And then, a masterpiece of Italian music like “Regina al Troubador”, a bit sad, sure, but what pleasure it is to be moved listening to it ten, a hundred times! “Se sei fuggita per quel che hai, i miei ossequi”: no gentlemen, here the music, though wonderful, takes a backseat, here there are human feelings, the values that should matter the most in our lives!
And then “Vedi Amsterdam…”: “Le madri non sanno perché i loro figli vanno, ritornano ad Amsterdam”… Even my mom used to say: “But you’re going to Amsterdam again? But you went last year”- and I: “Mandatory vacation, mandatory vacation, the tulips ignite the colors, and everyone rushes to see it again”. There you go, if there’s indeed something as beautiful as Le Orme, that is Amsterdam!
That was 1976, 30 years ago: realize how the world has worsened, how those 'Verità Nascoste' have become falsities in everyone's eyes, how today the concept of beauty, purity, art has decayed, and all you can do, after having gone to Amsterdam yourselves, will be to listen, praise, and let yourselves be enchanted by the music of Le Orme.
