Rebekka Bakken, from Oslo, born in 1970, a small but explosive blend of sensuality, beauty, and talent.
If I could, I would prefer to talk to you about her in general and not just one cd of her chic production, but having to remain faithful to Debasio's rules, I will choose "Is That You".
Bakken is a talented and versatile artist, yet there isn't a single review of her on the entire site, despite her multifaceted voice with its impressive range lending itself to ventures into the worlds of folk, jazz, soul, funk, r'n'b', and pop.
Having lived between Norway, New York, and Vienna, she has produced a remarkable eight albums filled with true class, pathos, and passion, and boasts collaborations with colossal names in the international jazz music scene.
She wins the Jazz Award, which is to Jazz what the Gold Record is to rock, and the Amadeus Austrian Music Award Prize.
She plays the violin, the piano and sings in a way that leaves one agape, she's a songwriter with undeniable chops, and if that wasn't enough, she's also stunning. What more could one say?
She debuted in 2001, but it will only be from 2003 that she will truly get noticed thanks to the cd “The Art Of How To Fall”, which will win over the general public while keeping her as an artist of niche appeal, perhaps due to the genre she's devoted to.
For true acclaim, one will have to wait until 2005 with the work “Is That You”, which will establish her even with a slightly more commercial and pop audience.
For a taste, the best cds:
Scattering Poems (with German pianist Julia Hulsmann) 2003
The Art Of How To Fall 2003
Is That You? 2005
September 2011
An explanatory showcase here.
Her voice, warm, passionate, marked yet delicate is capable of teleporting you to a parallel dimension where there is no place for chaos, haste, or the usual annoyances.
It's like taking a hot bath by candlelight after having an insane day that could be summed up with the Scream by Munch.
Try it to believe.
