Raúl Ruiz (1941–2011) was a Chilean film director known for prolific, often surreal and experimentally minded cinema. He worked extensively in France and is recognised for complex, dreamlike narratives and striking visual composition.

Frequently associated with surrealist and avant-garde cinema; internationally noted after a special issue of Cahiers du cinéma (1983) highlighting Three Crowns of the Sailor and City of Pirates. Collaborated with composer Jorge Arriagada on several scores.

Two DeBaser reviews praise Raúl Ruiz's hypnagogic, surreal approach in City of Pirates / La Città dei Pirati. Critics note anti-narrative structures, dense symbolic imagery, and strong visual composition. The film is described as dreamlike, labyrinthine, and philosophically ambitious.
