The second album by the Teutonic Germans Rammstein was released in 1997. This is a concentration of industrial music that sometimes dips into electronic parentheses. This album (after the convincing debut of the band with the release of their first album Herzleid, 1995) consecrates the sextet led by the great Till Lindemann to a wider audience, opening the doors of the band to Europe.
But now let's start analyzing the CD.
We begin with "Sehnsucht" (Desire), which starts with the classic industrial sound that this time leans heavily toward electronics. Although it is not one of my favorite songs, I think it is a very successful song.
We continue with the beautiful "Engel" (Angel), which, with its whistled beginning, flows into a chorus sung by a rather unsettling voice that in the video seems to be that of a child. In this song, Till openly states that he does not want to become an angel.
The third song is "Tier" (Animal), which talks about the adolescence of a girl raped by her father. From an instrumental point of view, this is the usual industrial sound of the band, which unfortunately is no longer quite as effective (note the neo-romantic change in the subsequent CD Mutter). The fourth song is "Bestrafe mich" (Punish Me), one of the most beautiful tracks on the album. It too has a strong industrial flavor, within which atmospheres can already be sensed that will be protagonists in their subsequent (master)works.
"Du hast" (You Have) is the next track and has, like "Sehnsucht," a rather flashy electronic opening. It too is one of the most successful tracks on the album. The following song leans into a harder sound; we are talking about "Bück dich" (Bend Down), which with its unsettling statements discusses the portrayal of women as a sexual object.
The seventh song is called "Spiel mit mir" (Play With Me), another sexual reference (after "Bück dich") on which our guys play and will play also in numerous concerts.
Next is "Klavier" (Piano), which wants to be but does not succeed in being the "Seemann" of the album. In fact, although it is lyrical and catchy in the right measure, it lacks that something to make it one of the most beautiful Rammstein-like lyrics.
The following song is the masterpiece called “Alter Mann” (Old Man), truly wonderful with its lyrics and its truly touching text. I consider it one of the most beautiful R+ songs.
What follows is "Eifersucht" (Jealousy), a truly horrible song which I believe to be the worst in their repertoire... N.d.
We reach the end of the track list to listen to the last song, which is the industrial delirium of "Küss mich [Fellfrosch]" (Kiss Me Furry Frog), a truly successful song that combines the two components (Lyric & Industrial) of the group.
In conclusion, I say that although I consider Sehnsucht a beautiful album (as a die-hard fan of Rammstein), it is the least successful of the four.
"Du Hast drew media attention to the band, which was accused of inspiring the Columbine killers."
"It is not an album classifiable in a precise genre, which is why it might attract listeners with diverse musical tastes."
The Rammstein bomb finally explodes: it returns to the scene with a more than epochal album, the definitive expression of tanz-metall.
This is not an ordinary album, it is a kind of Dantean amusement park whose purchase is virtually mandatory for those who love strong emotions.
