Many records I've bought were because that was the music I stumbled upon when I visited the record store. Today's record is one of those that left a lasting impression on me because, in response to my inquiry about who it was, I was urged to get a copy immediately, knowing it was a private copy and that I needed to wait for now.
And I waited a couple of months to acquire one of the first CD releases from the Swedish label Cold Meat Industry. Then, I got hooked on buying many works from this label for a couple of years, but that's another story. I'll just say that, in light of my periodic purges, this is the only record from the label, along with Arcana's first, that I've kept.
The reason lies entirely in listening. The catharsis is impersonal, the horror-like patina never becomes trivial, and the dark atmospheres are credible because they are filled with tangible density, casting shadows over us that reflect beyond. The evoked sensation results in a timeless experience, which could be placed in a medieval delirium with clattering chains, in the uncomfortable labyrinth inside an Egyptian pyramid, in an odyssey through the sharp twilight of Transylvania, or in an abduction where the alien kidnapping is partly recalled.
The low astral atmosphere has the detachment of an external observer who, protected by his aura of sanctity, can impersonally visit those doomed places that demand suffering. The unhealthy magnetism of the air persists throughout the work, leading to a revision of our catalepsies where a conscious awareness flexes to capture evidence of temptations. The gloomy basin offers us a cleansing in fetid mists, and the sinister whisper of the deceiver's traps is filtered through the lens of eternity, enchanting the memento mori.
At the edge of the universe, we visualize a dark purple Sphinx bordering the frontier of the other dimension, where a high wall of black onyx marks the shift in essence. The icy soundscape declares that "abandon all hope, ye who enter here," where the relinquishment of deceitfully good sentiments allows glimpses into the invisible world.
