LA RECENSIONE

Euros and Cents. November 1995 at Milan's Propaganda, The Bends tour, the ticket price is almost the same, but we're talking about thousands of lire instead of euros... It's not even worth asking if it's worth it, the evolution of the band in recent years has been such that comparisons are impossible: the transition from an alternative college band to interpreters of the contemporary spirit has definitively occurred.

The support act is Low. Less gloomy live compared to their excellent album Trust, yet they still fail to capture the audience's attention: the vocal harmonies of the two singers are nothing more than a pleasant background.

At 9:30 PM the show finally begins. A brief electronic intro and the scenic impact is guaranteed by There There, with Ed O’Brien and Johnny Greenwood supporting Thom Yorke's vocal performance by playing the drums at the sides of the stage. Yorke's voice is an incredible synthesis of power, virtuosity, and intensity. In Lucky, Scatterbrain, or in more intimate moments at the piano, like Pyramid Song. In Exit Music the audience listens in total silence. The complexity of the sound textures that characterize the band's compositions becomes even more striking in the perfection of the live execution. Even the seemingly more challenging tracks from Kid A do not create any rift with the rest of their production, and the sequence Idioteque / Everything In Its Right Place remains one of the most intense moments of the concert. The atmosphere that is created is absolutely unique, thanks to a use of electronics capable of creating emotional landscapes worthy of the best New Order and Joy Division. There is also room for some songs from The Bends: they are the ones that most closely resemble their current style, like Bones and My Iron Lung. The choice of Fake Plastic Trees is surprising, almost moving in its disarming simplicity. Sit Down Stand Up. Finally, Karma Police.

A series of unique sensations, everything has just ended but their music is still in the air. It's really hard to want to listen to anything else...
