Racer X is an American heavy/speed metal band from Los Angeles, known for technical, shred-oriented guitar work by Paul Gilbert and fast, virtuosic songs from the 1980s onward.

Formed in the Los Angeles scene of the 1980s, Racer X released Street Lethal (1986) and Second Heat (1988) in their first phase, disbanded around 1989, and reunited to issue Technical Difficulties (2000), Superheroes and Getting Heavier (2003). Key members include Paul Gilbert (guitar), Jeff Martin (vocals), John Alderete (bass) and Scott Travis (drums). Paul Gilbert later became well known for his work with Mr. Big; John Alderete later played with The Mars Volta; Scott Travis joined Judas Priest.

DeBaser's reviews celebrate Racer X's technical, speed-driven heavy metal and Paul Gilbert's guitar work. Reviews cover the classic 1980s era (Street Lethal, Second Heat) and the band's reunion albums (Technical Difficulties, Superheroes, Getting Heavier). Overall reception is positive, praising musicianship while noting occasional excesses.

For:Fans of technical heavy metal, guitar virtuosos, and 1980s LA metal nostalgia.

Lights, speed, excess, showiness... a piece of magnificent and cursed ’80s Los Angeles also passes through here.

The riffs are really awesome, the style is somewhat glam (if you see the CD booklet...) and the metal offered is exquisitely crafted.
