In February of last year, my buddy, although I am much better myself..., Genital Grinder had delighted you by literally tearing apart the third album of the Teutonic combo; indeed, I feel exactly the same as him, Unpop is an embarrassing album. I don't think it's the right moment to delve into the subject of criticism; for those interested, I recommend reading the review by the good GG, so as to have an accurate picture of the content, or rather the lack thereof at this point, of the album in question.
Yet only three years earlier, in 1994, Pyogenesis, originally from Stuttgart where they had taken their first rough steps in the music scene under the modest name of Immortal Hate, released Sweet X-Rated Nothings. A decisive step forward compared to the Death-Doom that had well characterized the early releases, the first anticipatory EPs of the long-distance debut.
A well-executed production, how I miss those years marked by Nuclear Blast, capable of highlighting in particular the dual vocals, one clean and the other in a semi-growl always completely understandable. Two solid guitars, one with a sound much oriented towards the Dark; a well-present rhythm section, with a pulsating, solid, very active bass in the temporal course of the individual songs.
The reference points are directed towards much more well-known bands of those years like Anathema, Tiamat, My Dying Bride; with that disorienting Dark imprinting as occurs in one of the best tracks of the collection "It’s On Me": that bass at the beginning of the piece reminds me damnably of Simon Gallup of the Cure!! I know some might mistake me for a madman... but I hear the Cure, for heaven's sake, in the three minutes of the song, apart from the guttural singing part and the end of the track where it enters Gothic-Metal territories. And then everything changes.
A brief acoustic intro of about a minute: this is how the work begins before giving way to "Fade Away". A catchy chorus that immediately gets into your bloodstream. Changes of register, changes of tone, changes of voice: one of the best pages ever written by the Germans, complete with a very brief insert of classical guitar. Amorphis and Celestial Season come to mind as evident comparisons.
The slow, very dark, and interminable, we're beyond seven minutes in length, title track; spiral, enveloping, deadly plots with a funereal flavor illuminate the progress of the track that gradually grows in intensity until the explosive conclusion that also benefits from a live recorded chorus of a not particularly enthusiastic audience: "Fuck Pyogenesis" is what you hear!!. Another track to point to as one of the best ever to come out of the minds of Flo and Tim, responsible for writing almost all the songs present here.
I conclude by mentioning the deadly duo "Masquerade" "Through The Flame": a frenetic advance, a speed that tends "to rise"; and it is the bad, dirty voice that becomes the undisputed protagonist.
A great debut that would be replicated with the subsequent Twinaleblood.
Then a continuation of a career that is better left alone...
Ad Maiora.
Tracklist and Lyrics
03 Fade Away (04:35)
Is this godless pleasure real,
Or is it holy what I feel?
Am I lusting for the sky,
Like a useless bitter cry?
And you shall turn my eyes into tears
Each dying dream I have to fear
But now I'm here to take a stand
I've got you mind in my hand!!!
Fade away... my love
Red tears caress human things
And the clock of hate fuckin' rings
You will bleed, yes you do
And everything is fuckin' new
And you shall turn my eyes into tears
Each dying dream I have to fear
But now I'm here to take a stand
I've got you mind in my hand!!!
No compromise in what I do
Rub your face in shit - ain't that cool?
We were used to be friends
This love fades away and friendship ends
And you shall turn my eyes into tears
Each dying dream I have to fear
But now I'm here to take a stand
I've got your mind in my hand!!!
Fade away... my love
This one is for the horny little girls
Please put you fingers in your anal cunt
What you say... what you do...
Everything is so fucking new
No heart in your cave
Go to sleep in your grave
And you shall turn...
