LA RECENSIONE

Chris Thile, an amateur mandolinist, in 2008 gathered four incompetent friends with the intent of bypassing bluegrass to head who knows where... but the result is unique.

Besides the classical influences, I even hear echoes of Metheny, Haden, and at times Frisell, but also not.

The suite in 4 movements "The Blind Leaving The Blind" (42 minutes) seems challenging, awkward and boring only to reveal itself as phenomenal on the third listen. The "Kid A" in its genre? Maybe.

Who knows what he'll come up with next time...

P.S. ZOT is wonderful!
