Reviewing the Prophilax is incredibly challenging: on one hand, I am drawn to their music as music, which is objectively well-crafted, occasionally even beautiful: good melodies, nice solos, and the musicians are true musicians.
On the other hand, I am attracted by their gratuitous vulgarity, their pornographic songs full of vulgarity that sometimes are almost annoying. But if I don't think about it, I realize they entertain me, make me laugh, they are endearing to me.
Their musical absurdities are some of the most entertaining things I have ever listened to, and listening to the various stories of Dora, Sirvano, Cagatone Joe is truly an invaluable amusement. But hearing them live is quite another thing. The fun multiplies because it's impossible to remain indifferent to their comedic skits that introduce the songs. Yes, they are always deeply entrenched in profanity as much as possible, but they make me laugh a lot.
Certainly, the thing is subjective and that’s why my rating doesn’t reflect what I think because indeed the Prophilax should be taken with a grain of salt: they can be hilarious for some and irritating for others.
Let's delve now into the show by Ceppaflex (singer) and Sbhor (guitarist). The live, in two discs, is a wonderful showcase of their best tracks and it also presents new pieces from the latest "Il quinto escremento". It begins with the timeless "Dora Daccela Ancora", wonderful, continuing with "In preda al raptus anale". It's amusing to hear Ceppaflex introducing "Fateme pija la patente" by recounting his controversies with the nuns (later he’ll talk about church and more). Ceppaflex continues in his musical adventure made of sex, pornography, and "mignotte" with the following "Don mignotte", "Pornografia Unica Via", "Alice nel paese dei cazzi", reaching the hilariously disgusting "In viaggio con Cagatone Joe". A sporadic episode because it goes back into pornography and absurd pornography with "Mano". Disc 1 continues in this way, among hilarious vulgarities and swear words, and so forth.
The second disc continues with "Fotturion", "tronco cionco", "Il giorno della ceppa", "Pompotron" and "Analità". To reach the unexpected ballad, naturally pornographic and concerning the goddess of Ceppaflex and Sbhor: "Dora in Poi si chiaverà". Beautiful melodies, great solos, moving but those words ruin everything and instead of letting myself be captured by musical sweetness, I am taken by laughter. Nothing more happens in the concert, except the usual recipe that nonetheless wins, wins, and wins. The disc closes with the studio version of "Puttanic", a track from the soundtrack of the homonymous redub of the famous Titanic. 3 stars.
For me, it would gladly be 5 for its hilarious show that perhaps doesn't come across in the review due to the disc's length. But as I’ve mentioned before, this disc, this live, their musical proposal, their comedy is really tough for those who do not appreciate it. So I choose an intermediate score between quality music, but with a purely comedic intent, which for me is hilarious, but for many exaggerated and irritating.
For those who want to have fun, it works just fine and surely Prophilax will become a band to get attached to, for those who are looking for something else, I recommend listening to this live and judging it for its music, and not for its endless vulgarity.
