The Profile

Possessed are a San Francisco Bay Area metal band widely credited with pioneering death metal, debuting with Seven Churches (1985) and later issuing Beyond the Gates (1986) and The Eyes of Horror (1987). They reformed in 2007 and released Revelations Of Oblivion in 2019.

Formed in the Bay Area (USA) in 1983, Possessed helped define death metal with Seven Churches (1985). The classic lineup included Jeff Becerra (vocals/bass), Mike Torrao (guitar), Larry LaLonde (guitar), and Mike Sus (drums). The Eyes of Horror EP (1987) was produced by Joe Satriani. The band disbanded in the late 1980s, reformed in 2007, and released Revelations Of Oblivion in 2019. LaLonde later joined Primus.

These reviews present Possessed as raw, feral pioneers linking Bay Area thrash to death metal. Seven Churches (1985) earns praise for speed, charisma, and influence; Beyond the Gates (1986) and The Eyes of Horror (1987) are noted for brutality, rough production, and stronger Slayer vibes (with Satriani producing the EP). Jeff Becerra’s harsh, distinctive vocals stand out. Critiques focus on repetitiveness and production, but historical importance is emphasized.
