THE REVIEW

Christmas is a wonderful thing. And the tradition of giving gifts is also wonderful: this year I received an mp3 player (I won't say which one, beware of subliminal advertising...) that plays mp3, wma, and even txt files, has a radio and can record, all supported by a 20 (twenty) gigabyte memory—not crumbs—and all in the palm of my hand. Another highlight is the fidelity: I don't miss a single note, a passage, nothing at all, you can tell it's something spectacular! I spent Boxing Day and the days after filling it with songs, among which I included those from this CD, which I had put aside. The result? I've reconsidered Brian and his friends: it's not my genre and I don't like it that much, but I have to admit it boasts quite a production and mix.

I don't know who the producer is, but they've done a great job: they've played with the voice, synthesizers, guitar effects, with violins and keyboards to fill the sound, with the other band instruments (bass and drums, both very well cared for and active in the executions)... All things that my stereo hadn't made me notice! As for the "global" aspect, what you get is a nice album, maybe not up to its predecessors but interesting and easy to listen to, it won't unleash any kind of energy and grit but it's not slow or boring and can be quite appreciated. Note on two songs in particular, "English Summer Rain" and "Protect Me From What I Want," in my opinion the best of the bunch. I would say it's more than deservedly passable: I didn't expect anything more from them and indeed didn't get anything more, but fans of the genre won't throw it in the garbage. And now, excuse me, but I still have many, many gigs to fill...

Summary by Bot

The reviewer initially skeptical about Placebo revisits their album Sleeping With Ghosts via a high-fidelity mp3 player. They acknowledge impressive production, a rich mix of instruments and effects, and enjoyable songs like 'English Summer Rain' and 'Protect Me From What I Want.' Though not a fan of the genre, they find the album easy to listen to and worth appreciation, though it lacks the energy of previous works.

For those who like Placebo, this album will be enjoyable.

"Sleeping With Ghosts" is a slow and poignant ballad, perhaps the best track on the album.

Placebo are among the musicians with the most technique in the UK.

Try to replicate the intro of 'Bulletproof Cupid' and you'll realize how many syncopations there are.

"The best tracks remain the rock ones in Placebo style while the electronic ones are quite repetitive."

"Special Needs is the worst song I have ever heard. Electronics mixing with Placebo’s music is not a good match."
