Pink Martini & Saori Yuki

Musical Group or Musician

Pink Martini is an American musical ensemble founded by Thomas Lauderdale (1994) known for multilingual, genre-blending orchestral pop and world-influenced repertoire. Saori Yuki is a Japanese singer who rose to fame in the 1960s and collaborated with Pink Martini on the album '1969'.

Pink Martini formed in Portland, Oregon in 1994. Saori Yuki had a successful single "Yoake No Scat" in the late 1960s. The collaborative album '1969' pairs Pink Martini's arrangements with Saori Yuki's vocals and centers on covers dated circa 1969.

The DeBaser review praises the collaborative album '1969' as an elegant, uniform collection of covers largely sung in Japanese. Saori Yuki's delicate, seductive vocal is highlighted as a perfect match for Pink Martini's arrangements. Standout tracks cited include "Yuuzuki (Evening Moon)" and "Blue Light Yokohama." The reviewer ranks this release among Pink Martini's best.

For:Fans of Pink Martini, listeners of vintage Japanese pop, bossa nova and orchestral/pop crossover music.

"Hey Eugene" remains, in my opinion, the most representative masterpiece of Pink Martini, the album I would recommend to anyone unfamiliar with this original and extraordinary project: if you don't like it, then there's something in you that... oops, I meant to say, you can move on to other shores. But if you do like it, the next step I would suggest is precisely this one, an unusual choice, not very canonical, but in my opinion, perfect.
