The "Bar la Muerte" label is really doing a great job of offering new things to its audience.
I don't know how long the "senators" of our local alternative scene will manage to cling to their seats, but certainly Pin Pin Sugar deserve some space.
Their style is jazz corroded by distortions and experimentation, the result of great work in sound, composition, and technique. Certainly not a conventional project by the Milanese trio, and this is evident from the intellectual attitude of the album (36 pieces, 36 minutes), in a luxurious plum-colored cardboard, where you truly find references to anything from John Zorn to Sonic Youth, from Caetano Veloso to Metallica without any scruples.
The group closest to them, I believe, might be Primus, at least for the prominent bass that sets the rhythm for the entire album. In general, the rhythmic section takes the lead, demonstrating great cohesion within the band, although I found the episodes where the sax, trumpet, or guitar carve out their own space to be more effective.
I don't know the academic backgrounds of the musicians, but certainly, the level of technical preparation is not an everyday thing. However, it is not an easy album.
Trivializing, one could say it crosses jazz with hardcore. If you are purists of one or the other genre, just forget it. As for me, I've made my decision. I'll give my cousin the Quintorigo albums, as now I have Pin Pin Sugar.
