Phil Collins is a drummer and singer known both as a solo artist and as a member of Genesis. His musical ‘calling’ began at the age of 5 when he was given a toy drum set. At 12, he formed his first band.

Phil Collins is an exceptional and extremely versatile drummer, capable of exploring both rock and pop genres as well as the more sophisticated realm of jazz. After a long tenure with Genesis, Phil decided to embark on a solo career, achieving truly flattering success. His style is simple, direct, and far from Genesis' elaborate suites, but he has the good sense to never fall into bad taste.

In 1989, he released "…But Seriously," which shook the mainstream pop world, which was not really accustomed to albums of such musical depth. It's a simple album but contains delightful surprises and classy solutions. Certainly, it's a pop album, no doubt, but it stands out from the kind of rubbish that's around nowadays… But Seriously relies heavily on the enchanting melodies that Phil manages to create, also benefiting from an exceptional collaboration with Eric Clapton.

The album starts with '‘Hang In Long Enough‘' a track characterized by the sax which is present throughout the song. Right from the first track, there's a noticeable depth in the composed music and a Phil very much at ease as both drummer and singer. '‘That's Just The Way It Is‘' has a very slow pace with a great keyboard work. The first hit from the album is '‘Do You Remember‘', a beautiful and poignant song. Another single is '‘Something Happened On The Way To Heaven‘'. '‘Colours‘' is a semi-suite composed of two rather distinct parts, one slow and one a bit more upbeat. '‘I Wish It Would Rain Down‘', where Eric Clapton's involvement makes the piece magical with his compositional talent. The beautiful choruses at the end of the song converse with Phil. Another stunning track is '‘Another Day In Paradise‘', the most beautiful on the album. It always stirs emotions and has now become a classic in Phil Collins' repertoire. '‘Heat On The Street‘' is a very beautiful and inspired piece. '‘All Of My Life‘' is introduced by a fantastic saxophone solo, and overall this is one of the most beautiful melodies Phil Collins has ever written. In '‘Saturday Night And Sunday Morning‘' Phil Collins' great singing is evident, and the song flows very well. '‘Father To Son‘' is a dream-like track. The album concludes with '‘Find A Way To My Heart‘' which, as the title suggests, encourages finding the way into each of our hearts.

This album has definitively cemented the solo career of one of the world's best drummers. It's fundamental in Phil Collins' discography and in that of British pop in general. Meticulously crafted, emotional and played magnificently. An album with apparent simplicity but with sounds and music of great depth. Beautiful.

Tracklist Lyrics and Videos

01   Hang In Long Enough (04:44)

The signs are getting clearer, clearer than you need
The writing's on the wall, for you to see

You never thought you'd ever get the taste
You never thought that it could be this good
Just tell me what you want and I'll find the key
Reach out and touch it's all yours.

If you hang in long enough, you'll do it
Just hang in long enough

You're down on the ground, or so you say
You'd sell the hole in your pocket, if you could find a way
Don't ask me how I know, you don't wanna hear
It's been a long hard road, and the end is getting near.

You never thought you'd ever get the chance
You never thought your break would come along
If you tell me what you want, I'll find the key
Just reach out and touch it's all yours

If you hang in...

They always say
The best things in life are free
But you want to have everything
Well you're going to have to beg if you want it all.

So hang in long enough, you'll do it
Hang in long enough

They'll let you out, then pull you in
Playing hell with your emotions,
You'll feel like giving in.

So just hang in long enough...

02   That's Just the Way It Is (05:20)

All day long he was fighting for you
And he didn't even know your name
Young men come and young men go
But life goes on just the same

And I don't know why
Why do we keep holding on
I don't know why
Pretending to be oh so strong
Oh why
Is there something I don't know
Or something very wrong, with you and me
or maybe

That's the way it is, there's nothing I can do,
That's just the way it is.

They've been waiting for word to come down
They've been waiting for you night and day
They won't wait any longer for you
It may already be too late

And I don't know why...

You see the dying, you feel the pain
What have you got to say
If we agree that we can disagree
We could stop all of this today

It's been your life for as long as you can remember
But you cannot fight no more
You must want to look your son in the eyes
When he asks you what you did it for

'Cos all day long he was fighting for you
And he didn't even know your name
Young men come and young men go
But life goes on just the same

I don't know why...

03   Do You Remember? (04:36)

04   Something Happened on the Way to Heaven (04:51)

We had a life, we had a love
But you don't know what you've got 'til you lose it
Well that was then and this is now
And I want you back
How many times can I say I'm sorry (how many times)
Yes I'm sorry

How can something so good go so bad
How can something so right go so wrong
But I don't know, I don't have all the answers
But I want you back
How many times can I say I'm sorry (how many times)
Well you know...

You can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving less you come with me
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, please believe in me

I only wanted someone to love
But something happened on the way to heaven
It got a hold of me and wouldn't let go
And I want you back
How many times can I say I'm sorry (how many times)
Oh yes I'm sorry (sorry)
Well you know...

You can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving less you come with me
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, please believe me

You can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving 'til it's all over
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, let me show you

They say you can't take it with you
When you go
And I believe it
But taking what I've got or being
Here with you, you know
I'd, I'd rather leave it

We had a life, we had a love
But you don't know what you've got 'til you lose it
Well that was then and this is now
And I want you back
How many times can I say I'm sorry (how many times)
Oh yes I'm sorry (sorry sorry)
Well you know...

You can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving less you come with me
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, please believe me

You can run, and you can hide
But I'm not leaving 'til it's all over
We've had our problems but I'm on your side
You're all I need, please believe in me

05   Colours (08:51)

06   I Wish It Would Rain Down (05:27)

You know I never meant to see you again
But I only passed by as a friend....yeah
All this time I stayed out of sight
I started wondering why

Now I, ooh now I wish it would rain down, down on me
Ooh yes I wish it would rain, rain down on me now
Ooh yes I wish it would rain down, down on me
Ooh yes I wish it would rain on me

You said you didn't need me in your life
Oh I guess you were right..........yeah
Ooh I never meant to cause you no pain
But it looks like I did it again, yeah

Now I, now I know I wish it would rain down, down on me
Ooh yes I wish it would rain, rain down on me now
Ooh girl I wish it would rain down, down on me
Ooh yes I wish it would rain on me

Though your hurt is gone, mines hanging on, inside
And I know, well it's eating me through it's eating me through
Every night and day
I'm just waiting on your sign

'Cuz I know, I know I never meant to cause you no pain
And I realize I let you down.....ohhh yeah
But I know in my heart of hearts
I know I'm never gonna hold you again, no

Now I, now I know I wish it would rain down, down on me
Oh you know I wish it would rain, rain down on me now
Ooh yes I wish it would rain down, down on me
Yes you know I wish it would rain down, rain down over me
Just rain down over me

Just let it rain down, let it rain down, let it rain down
Ooooh yeah

Let it rain down rain down
Rain down over me
Just let it rain down, just let it rain down, let it rain down
Just let it rain

07   Another Day in Paradise (05:22)

She calls out to the man on the street
"Sir can you help me?
It's cold and I've nowhere to sleep.
Is there somewhere you can tell me?"

He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there.

Oh, think twice, 'cause it's another day for you and me in Paradise
Oh, think twice, 'cause it's another day for you, you and me in Paradise

Just think about it.

She calls out to the man on the street
He can see she's been crying
She's got blisters on the soles of her feet
She can't walk but she's trying.

Oh, think twice, 'cause it's another day for you and me in Paradise
Oh, think twice, it's just another day for you, you and me in Paradise

Just think about it

Oh Lord, is there nothing more anybody can do?
Oh Lord, there must be something you can say

You can tell from the lines on her face
You can see that she's been there
Probably been moved on from everyplace
Cause she didn't fit in there

Oh, think twice, 'cause it's another day for you and me in Paradise
Oh, think twice, it's just another day for you, you and me in Paradise

Just think about it.

Think about it.

It's just another day, for you and me, in Paradise
It's just another day, for you and me, in Paradise
Paradise
Just think about it
Paradise
Just think about
Paradise

08   Heat on the Street (03:51)

You've gotta shout if you've got something to say
I know it's getting bad, you read it every day
And you, you can try your best ot fight it
But you can't make it on your own

Someone better tell the people up there
I think they ought to know, the bubble's just about to bust
Tell them they'd better beware
The word is on the street, get up on your feet, and shout out

The kids out there don't know how to react
The streets are getting tough and that's a matter of fact
and I, I can't take it any longer
But we can't make it on our own

The people there find it hard to relate
They don't know how it feels to be standing there on your own
Believe me, it's never too late
It's time to make a move, get up on your feet and shout

Stop, look down, everybody, do you see what's going on
around you, stop...

Shout out, shout it out, shout loud
Shout out, shout it out, shout loud

There are pepple who give and there are people who take
But I believe it's gonna get better
Realise what a difference you make
And don't turn away, Hey! I'm talking to you!

So there's only the one solution
Stop and think what's going on
You can draw your own conclusions
But we won't make it on our own

Someone better tell the people up there
I think they ought to know
The bubble's just about to burst
Tell them they'd better beware
The word is on the street
Get up on your feet and shout

Stop, look down, everybody
Do you see what's going on
Around you, stop...

09   All of My Life (05:35)

10   Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (01:25)

11   Father to Son (03:28)

Somewhere down the road, you're gonna find a place
It seems so far, but it never is
and You won't need to stay, but you might lose your strength
on the way

Sometimes you may feel you're the only one
Cos all the things you thought were safe, ooh now they're gone
But you won't be alone, I'll be here to carry you along
Watching you 'til all the work is done

and When you find your heart, you'd better run with it
Cos when she comes along, she could be breaking it
No there's nothing wrong, you're learning to be strong
Don't look back
She may soon be gone, so don't look back
She's not the only one, remember that

If your heart is beating fast, then you know she's right
If you don't know what to say, well, that's all right
You don't know what to do?
Remember she is just as scared as you

Don't be shy, umm... when it hurts to say
Remember, you're gonna get hurt someday, anyway
Then you must lift your head, keep it there
Remember what I said
I'll always be with you don't forget
Just look over your shoulder I'll be there.

If you look behind you, I will be there.
