There is absolutely nothing new in the Phaser's album, and they are not ashamed of it.
They start from Washington DC, but their gaze is decidedly aimed towards Brit rock, with references so blatant they almost feel like plagiarism...
The atmosphere in here is something I'm already familiar with, yet it's still engaging, and behind the choice of a delicately psychedelic opening like "Are you there?" there is wisdom. And the shadow of the latest Archive.
"Baby Blue" reminds me of my girlfriend, a tender ballad to remember; I'd like it on the next Radiohead album, as well as "Can't Get You Out Of My Mind," guitar, voice, and lots of sadness. Then... the more rock tracks could have been written by the Verve and we wouldn't notice; many tributes also to Spiritualized, and in the interludes, there are even echoes of Sigur Ròs!
Decide for yourself whether to be disgusted by such artistic dependence, or not to care and listen to these songs that will stick in your head, because they are beautiful, often worthy of the masters the Phaser have attempted to reach. I've been listening to it for a month and it hasn't bored me yet.
