THE REVIEW

Some time ago I fell in love with the video "California": the life on the road of indie rock bands... how great!. With that guy brushing his teeth and rinsing with Jack Daniel's... so crude!

I rushed to Biancaneve (my trusted Moroccan) and bought an "authorized copy" of the album (the original was too expensive). I get in the car, insert it into the player and... drum rolls and 30 seconds of distorted guitar accompanied by a pretty decent rhythm; I'm not too surprised: it sounds like the Strokes meeting the Muse! Let's move to track 2... hey, this is indie rock! Wow, I like the melody and it seems like he's doing you a favor by singing; the bridge carries me away with that guitar setting the rhythm. Damn, how loud is the ending... and what's with this powerful drumming? Ah, the third track has started... mmh, the chorus is cute but nothing special. Ooh, finally a normal drum and a slightly distorted guitar in this fourth track... but there's too much calm after two minutes... here comes the confusion! But don't these Phantom Planet know a bit of relaxation?
Maybe the fifth track will answer my question... Oh nooo!!! Here too, "doped" drums, Casablancas-like voice, and distortions!... Luckily it's over! AAAAAAHHHH what's this racket??!! Track 6, stop it!... However, the verse isn't bad, and this dragging rocker voice is spot on. But the rest of the band just creates confusion... oh my god, my ears are exploding!!! I like this: guitar and voice are clean, the chorus reminds me of Muse but it's fine; as usual, after two minutes they all go crazy but here they do it well and moderately... the drummer does well eh! Track 8: we're only halfway through the CD, electric percussion, bass, and timid voice... damn, what calmness! Oops, I spoke too soon, here comes the chorus!! Hey, wait a minute... but these guys sound like Muse, again!!!
Track 9 is the same as track 3, thank goodness, at least I can skip it! Track 10 can almost seem sweet, maybe these five are calming down! Not true... track 11 brings back the musical chaos and the dirtiness of a poorly refined sound!
Here's "California"! Beeeeautiful, definitely one of the best (and calmest) on the album. Track 13, well, acoustic guitar and melodic voice, melodic bass, everything is melodic in this MTV pop rock that I really like a lot. Let's move to track 14... are there strings?! Another pop rock song? But these guys are crazy! If I had known, I would have listened to the CD from the end since my ears are swearing at me!

Hey, what's happening? "Pa.. Pa.. Pa.. Pa.. Pa.. Pa" the CD got stuck!! But there are 2 songs missing!!! ARGH!!!! Well, shall we sum it up? Another band following the trail of 70s rock fused with that of the 90s. If they didn't make all this (useless) confusion, I'd even give them a 4! The story of Biancaneve has a moral: don't buy burned CDs... burn them yourself!

Summary by Bot

The reviewer was initially drawn by the music video for 'California' and quickly immersed into Phantom Planet's debut album. The sound blends influences from The Strokes and Muse, featuring strong rhythms and distorted guitars. Despite catchy melodies and highlights like 'California,' the album often feels chaotic and confusing due to abrupt shifts and noisy production. The review ends with a mixed impression, appreciating moments of calm but critiquing the overall lack of refinement.
