If you don't know who Peter Gabriel is, if you've never listened to him either with Genesis or as a solo artist in his World Music project, if you've never had anything to do with him at all, then I'm sorry for you but stay away from this record.
"Up" is a difficult product, it's mature music from a mature artist, not aimed at pimply teenagers who get excited with pumped decibels and Rage Against the Machine songs (which I quite like, anyway). But if you know Gabriel, if you've been weaned on "So" and his other previous works, if you're not afraid to admit that music is not just instinct and madness but also class and temperament, then you should not hesitate to buy this record.
You will be captivated by Peter's sober elegance, by his lucid sonic innovation. Moreover, which is never a bad thing, the songs are “beautiful”: it’s not just the fact that it's elite music, cultured and refined that intrigues, but it's precisely the fact that the songs are very enjoyable (not easy but listenable) that makes it a great work.
Not for everyone.
Music is too necessary for Gabriel to be treated like any transgenic seed; it profits and is eternal joy that molds the soul.
An omnivorous man who does not know perpetual routine and is a constant nonconformist, he experiments to elevate and distinguish himself.
"A record with a gestation of over 10 years, a nocturnal work channeling introverted existentialism into impeccable song form."
"For what I need, I need crappier music and this, all in all, is not as hideous as I expected: boring yes, but hideous would be unfair!"
