What to say about Peter Gabriel I? It is the debut album of a great artist, who had already demonstrated his originality and worth with the mighty shows during his Genesis era. After leaving the group in 1975, following more than a year of reflection, Peter decided to return to the studio to embark on what would become a long and splendid solo career. For his first creation, Gabriel surrounds himself with some of the best musicians around, including standout performers like Tony Levin on bass and Robert Fripp on guitar.
The album opens with "Moribund The Burgermeister", a song dealing with St. Vitus' Dance and at moments recalling the sounds and style of Genesis. After this very original beginning, it moves to the enchanting "Solbury Hill," still a "hit" today. The third track is "Modern Love", a thoughtful analysis of love. After the amusing "Excuse Me," you encounter the slow but beautiful "Humdrum" and subsequently "Slowburn". The blues and sacred atmospheres stand out in "Waiting For The Big One" and the introduction of "Down The Dolce Vita", courtesy of the London Symphony Orchestra. The album concludes with the splendid "Here Comes The Flood", sealing an excellent debut.
The album was released in 1977 and sold well. It is a must-have among the records of any Peter Gabriel fan.

"Genuine gems of Peter’s solo production already appear here: 'Solsbury Hill', 'Humdrum' and 'Here Comes the Flood'."
"An essential album: still timid, derivative, but valuable."
