"Sowego" is the title of the third official album by this band unknown to most. But I would like to talk to you about them.
I would like to tell you their story. I saw this band being born, evolving, and fading away, yet remaining alive through 3 beautiful albums.
In this case, I can sincerely say that I know them, because I have been part of their world.
Pelican Milk was not just a band; it was a combination of things, an attitude, an energy around which artistic experiences, experiments revolved.
I will never forget the summer almost 10 years ago, a house in the middle of nowhere, far from the hustle, surrounded by sunflowers and nature in a small village in central Italy, where we would meet to play music, talk, dream.
Their music sounds a lot like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and all that seventies sound that everyone knows.
But it wasn’t particularly intentional; I believe it was their own attitude that generated this. I think Pelican Milk were born in the wrong era.
Despite this, they managed to create their own sound, recognizable, strong, very personal. The first core was born in London, where Alex Savelli, founder alongside Simon Painter, lived, and where the first songs came to life, but it was in Italy that it truly began to grow and evolve when Alex wanted to reunite with Terence Todaro, with whom he had already played in a hard rock band for many years.
Thus was born "South Enough", a varied and interesting album, a perfect synchronicity of rock, English folk, and psychedelia, where numerous musicians converge, where from start to finish, you are completely transported by an orgy of different instruments (violin, sax, trumpet, percussion adding to the main instruments), completely in sync, also engaging in wonderful improvisations (which took place and were recorded in a deconsecrated church in England), an engaging and fascinating journey. There are moments in this album that are truly deep and profound, where emotions are lost, and their music enters your soul, overwhelming you. Some tracks will be part of a short film, others part of a movie.
Their second album is titled "Welcome", my favorite. With it, the class of a truly underrated band is reiterated, a band that in various opinions is a great band [meanwhile, they were noticed by the great Eddie Kramer (producer of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin), who was struck by their music playing in a shop in central London while he was shopping :) ], they were produced by Paul Chain (with whom they also recorded a tribute piece to Saint Vitus).
"Welcome" is more mature, less folk compared to the previous one, quite psychedelic, with vaguely Doors-like and progressive reminiscences. Another journey, another excellent proof. Another little gem.
But let's look at their third album, "Sowego", also because otherwise someone might tell me that the review is off-topic...
Just for information, during the period between the second and third album, Pelican Milk recorded an unofficial record, the result of exceptional improvisations together with the great double bassist Ares Tavolazzi, and one of the pieces from this project accompanies a video on the death of Pierpaolo Pasolini. Psychedelia now dominates, giving us one last great journey that will close the trilogy. Inspired, Pelican Milk rides the waves of a relentless Pink Floyd-like sound. The most important part of the album is a long opus occupying the central part of the record, divided into 5 different moments from blues to psychedelic and visionary rock (I have been working on this part of the album for years now, wanting to create an ambitious and complicated video installation that would realize my dream of bringing their music back to life).
What to say, maybe I got a bit lost in memories rather than focusing on describing their albums.
I know, but I hope I have left you with the curiosity to look for them and dedicate some of your time to them, because this is a truly great band, truly valid, that I would like you to know to not deprive you of the pleasure of experiencing their sound if you are a music lover.
And trust me, I'm not saying this because I was connected to them; listen to them, and you'll understand why I feel infinitely lucky to have had the chance to follow them closely and live their energy with them.
