The Varesini PAY return with their seventh album (though more of a mini-album, lasting 20 minutes). A new self-production for the Punkrocker's Industry, which arrives two years after Virus, the intriguing multimedia project produced in 2014, inspired by a story by Alberto Moravia and released as a DVD+CD. As always in the latest productions, the group led by Mr. Grankio and Mr. Pinguino also focuses on the artistic aspect of the object itself. The CD, produced in only 200 copies, is indeed described as: 200 unique copies for a broken record. The disc is actually delivered split in two, directly by the artist who created the concept, Proserpio, with a second backup CD in a separate sleeve from the original artwork. This alone makes the work worthy of being purchased. In addition, the video that accompanies Sono stato io, the opening track chosen as a single, is... a recycled video. In fact, it harks back to a video by Blink 182 and features Travis Barker, the drummer of the American punk band.
In short, as usual, when the Varesini band is involved, there's plenty to indulge in various curiosities. Yes, but having said that, what's the album like? The evolution that has accompanied the band since Federico 3 e il destino infausto continues. The six tracks, with the seventh being a cover of Where is my mind by the Pixies, have clever and ironic lyrics, smooth and rounded arrangements, easily memorable choruses, and nice full and rich guitars. There's the punk spirit of the beginnings but also a decidedly singer-songwriter touch, if you'll allow me the term, in the care of the concepts expressed in the songs.
This feature has always been part of PAY's products. After all, just over 10 years ago, they had the courage to release a concept album like the aforementioned Federico 3, followed by an album as heterogeneous as one could imagine like La ragazza col coltello. So, they truly are "Atomic songs for people like they don't make anymore, stupid songs that stick in your head that never say the right thing", to quote the chorus of the single.
