"Berlin Calling" is a film released in theaters in 2009, where it tells the story of a German DJ Ickanus (aka Paul Kalkbrenner) who, through drugs, loses his girlfriend and encounters a series of problems (blah blah blah), but we are not here to critique the film, rather its soundtrack.
Right from the first track, you can understand what we are talking about: electronic music in full Downtempo style (a musical genre that is nonexistent or completely unknown here): relaxing productions, pleasant to listen to but with little emotional impact and, in some ways, also repetitive. Certainly! Considering that this music does not belong to our musical culture, it is found to be a bit monotonous; the only track we can "save" is the single extracted "Sky And Sand" which is also the film's theme.
A separate review is warranted for this track; it deserves praise with its strong beats, but not violent ones, leaving room for imagination. The male voice (not mentioned in the track) is pleasant and, we can say, it fits perfectly with Kalkbrenner's production.
In conclusion, a good album all in all, catchy and quite marketable, I reiterate that this musical genre is still little known here but this CD was (like the film) a good attempt at its dissemination (also with fairly satisfying results).
