I had promised myself to watch it, and I finally managed to do so. The short duration of the third chapter of the Underworld saga, which began in 2003 with the film of the same name, helped me a lot (as I think it helped everyone who watched this film). While the first one at least managed to give us well-shot action scenes and at least somewhat appreciable filmic moments, these two sequels are the festival of clichés.
Underworld - Rise of the Lycans marks the departure of Beckinsale, the protagonist of the previous two chapters. Already without her, the film loses at least in terms of good looks. This reason does not allow director Patrick Tatopoulos (who replaces Wiseman behind the camera) to continue the vampire/lycanthrope conflict that started with the first feature film and then got lost in the second. Tatopoulos has therefore decided, in agreement with the producers, to go back in time and tell us the beginning of it all. A beginning in which the already aristocratic vampires exploited the lycanthropes by using them as their bodyguards. Even the lycan Lucian is "used" by the rival race until he falls in love with Sonja (Rhona Mitra), Victor's daughter, the leader of the vampires. From the discovery of the secret relationship between the two begins the hunt for Lucian, who will be imprisoned along with other werewolves. Here, moved by love for his race, he improvises a rebellion from which all subsequent wars between the two factions will arise.
Yet another far-fetched story that relies entirely on the spectacle of battle scenes. Fights that are finally done with the weapons of the time. This is because in the previous films, the two races, instead of fighting with their extraordinary strengths, used any weapons, demonstrating once again the series' intent: to make useless films for easy profit. Not even the idea of retracing the history manages to make this Underworld a watchable film. Zero script and acting. Just a little blood here and there and the usual dark atmosphere.
Terrible.
