On the spaceship of Mr. George Clinton
Among the greatest albums of the Parliafunkadelicment Thang: rhythm, rhythm, and rhythm. There you go. Rhythmic, and carefree, and rhythmic again. What is this album if not pure rhythm, 100% rhythm seasoned with 5-6 brilliant melodic ideas? We can't even talk about song-form, it wouldn't be accurate. Itâs just this: an unavoidable powerful pounding groove, with some perfect melody added. Yet, despite this, the group achieved great commercial success, thanks especially to the masterpiece "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)" and completed the process that consecrated them as a cult band, in the literal sense given the religious-like aura their performances gained. Clinton was the Prime Minister of Funk, the public his collection of devotees.
Tradition (the chorus "slow down sweet chariot" on the title track) and innovation (the overall sound of the group, especially Bernie Worrell) blend together. Star-studded cast (it's truly fitting): Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley, Michael and Randy Brecker, Joe Farrell, Bootsy Collins, Michael Hampton and a killer groove, I repeat once more.
Did I perhaps say that "Mothership Connection" is simply rhythm? I listen to it again... and I correct myself. Nothing could be further from the truth. Itâs the Bible of P-Funk.
We want the funk, give up the funk.
