There is probably a big misunderstanding that ruins our lives: the idea that âpureâ pop music cannot be great music. And while we're at it, dear indie-rock extremists, let's also dispel the myth that âif everyone likes it, it's crapâ. Because this little record will even appeal â Iâm not saying to your friends, but â to your GIRLFRIENDS: and it remains a nice little record.
Sure, you still donât believe it, but youâre already asking yourself âyeah, okay, but what is it about?â Itâs about catchy, honest pop music that creates a feeling of euphoria in humans, and itâs true even if itâs written on their site! Iâm talking about melodic gems (Live by the water, Just to see you), bursts of college-pop (Weâve got all night), authentic anthems (oops, sorry, ANTHEMS) for teenagers (Words to sing), and moments of power-pop-meets-beach-boys (Sing about me)!!!
But above all, this album contains Say goodbye, aka ThePerfectPopSong. The song that's track number 2 on any compilation I've made in the last 10 years. A piece that is perversely, sweetly beautiful, and youâll find yourself humming even while changing a flat tire on the highway when itâs raining outside. If any hard-hearted indie-rocker still isnât convinced, consider the fact that â the album is from 1992 like Pavementâs Slanted & Enchanted â Papas Fritas are three like Husker Du â theyâre signed to a label that calling it independent is an understatement â the drummer is a woman who also sings â they toured with the Flaming Lips.
