The major label debut of Papa Roach is what Linkin Park's works are not: transcendental, cultured, blunt, violent/rap-influenced without being ingratiating. Sure, the sources of inspiration are numerous (Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine, Nirvana, Fugazi), but the Vacaville Scarafaggio reworks it in an original way and adapts it to its own state of mind: the rhythmic/granitic riffs of Jerry Horton and the themes tackled by a Jacoby Shaddix who does very well both in rapping and melodic singing attest to this.
"Between Angels And Insects" is practically Roach's identity card, but the other two singles are also excellent (the post-grunge of "Broken Home" and the punk/funkish "Last Resort"), "Revenge" and "Snakes" with their amusing scratched interludes, "Thrown Away" and the title track. I’m sorry, however, that the two subsequent albums by Shaddix and company, although well-made, do not match "Infest" in emotional charge...
