"...Society is looking at this and saying, 'This is heavy metal.' That's not heavy metal, that's an insane act.." Dave Mustaine - Megadeth (regarding the murder of Dimebag Darrell)
"Yesterday don't mean shit", "This love", "Primal concrete sledge", "Cowboys from hell", just over twenty minutes of performance, in which the songs are played more energetically one after the other and Pantera unleash all their explosive energy. Clearly, I wasn't there, and I had to settle (never a more fitting word) for watching it on video.
The footage is occasionally interspersed with shots of girls who make no mystery of their "charms", while Phil, in the meantime, shouts himself hoarse (in every sense of the word), Vinnie slaughters the skins, Rex goes back and forth jumping. It seems he really doesn't want to stop and put a foot on the amplifiers, a thing that Darrell does, as he clings to his DIME333 creating a spiral all around in which the "harsh sound" of his guitar rules, and even watching him, it's hard to understand how, unlike many other bands, he alone is worth as much as two guitarists together there playing, creating that sonic boulder made of distortions, clean arpeggios, and solos, without ever making one miss an additional six strings.
Pantera were in their prime, only Phil shows a bit of the consequences of a not exactly optimal condition (damn heroin!), but the performance is nonetheless remarkable. Watching this concert brought back memories of how much I loved the songs of this band, and especially its guitarist who, back in the day, was one of my idols, (forgive me, but when it comes to Pantera or Dimebag, I get nostalgic, so I added some quotes in his memory). Whether you like it or not, a large part of the metal of the past 15 years passes through them, and this video is one of the remaining testimonials. Recommended.
"...Pantera were, I think, the first band that I and my son Jimmy both got equally excited about. It was Jimmy who first got me to see them. They were a great band, and Dimebag was an innovative and passionate player." Brian May - (Queen)
"...Fuck the guitar playing ...Dime will never die ever -- he's in my veins. He's sitting at God's tavern, having a cold one with Randy Rhoads and Hendrix." Zakk Wylde - (Black Label Society/Ozzy Osbourne)
I hope one day to be sitting at that tavern with the aforementioned company.
