As with my last review, this time I've also gone hunting for new things, new bands, new sounds that no one would care about even if the 12:25 edition of Studio Aperto dedicated an entire segment to them. Today, I am very pleased to talk about one of the most interesting bands in the entire underground scene of the Marche region. Three members, two brothers and the son of one of them, hailing from Jesi and of an alternative/stoner rock genre with a 90s twist. They are the Palmer Generator.
Palmer Generator like Palmieri, stoner rock in family format. Founded in the spring of 2010, guitarist Tommaso "Polti" Palmeri, bassist Michele Palmieri (Tommaso's brother), and drummer Mattia Palmieri (Michele's son) share a passion for the American band Tool, and for everything related to psychedelia and post-rock. Their debut album (e)motionless, released in February 2013, almost sounds like the unborn child of those Tool between Ænima and Lateralus. But it's not just about the influence of one band; there's much more here. The whole is a cauldron of distorted, dark, evocative sounds, indeed "emotionless". Sensations that are hard to describe in words and can only be truly felt by listening with your ears. Proof is immediately evident in one of the first tracks, "Phoneutria", which immediately emphasizes the psychedelic side I mentioned, boasting the collaboration of a Peruvian flute player, Andrea, who makes everything even more enigmatic. A dark and heavy sound, conceived through the merging of the minds of the three members, driven solely by the search for the melody that unites their states of mind. Arcane and sinister melodies, just like Black Sabbath evoked in the 70s. Today, Palmer Generator tries to emulate them, with pieces like "Awaken" and "Enliven", the latter with its ten minutes of pure mental ecstasy. Moreover, between tracks, there's a constant growth and change in their music, always looking forward and towards new horizons. Seriously, one of my greatest surprises of the first half of 2013.
Even though, as a concluding sentence, it may seem very predictable, I warmly invite you to give a listen to what I, again, consider one of the most interesting bands in the Marche underground basement scene, and who will certainly make a lot more progress and, I hope, achieve much-deserved success!
